(CBS)- After a 5-1 start to the season, it’s been all downhill for the Bears dropping their last five games including a 41-25 rout at the hands of the division rival Packers this past Sunday night. But, despite the 5-6 record, the team is still alive in the playoff hunt if they can get things together down the stretch. With five games remaining, the Bears are just one game back of the Arizona Cardinals for the final Wild Card spot, tied with the Vikings and San Francisco 49ers.
What are their odds of making the playoffs? Well, the projections systems aren’t too favorable. In FiveThirtyEight’s projection model, the Bears have just a 23 percent chance of making a postseason appearance. Video game cheat codes snes. ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) is even lower, pegging the Bears chances at 15.2 percent and projecting the team to finish with a record of 7.4 and 8.6 or basically 7-9.
The pessimism from the models is understandable. The team is on a five game losing streak and they currently lose out on the tiebreaker to the Vikings due to their loss to Minnesota two weeks ago.
But, if you’re a glass half full person, there is reason for optimism. Of the team’s final five opponents, just one is currently above .500 (the Packers). Two have already fired coaches (Lions and Texans). Another, the Jacksonville Jaguars, could do so in the coming weeks. So, what would need to happen in order for the Bears to make the playoffs?
They would have to finish at least a game ahead of the Vikings in the win-loss column and or beat them in the Week 15 rematch. In the FiveThirtyEight model, giving the Bears wins in the next two weeks against the Lions and Texans moves their chances up to 44 percent. Winning those two games seems possible as they’re given a 73 percent win probability against the Lions and a 52 percent win probability against the Texans.
They would likely need some help from the Vikings in terms of Minnesota losing a few of their upcoming games. There’s both good and bad news on that front. The Vikings face the Jaguars this coming Sunday which is a likely win (83 percent probability). But, after that, Minnesota faces the Buccaneers (7-5), Bears and Saints (9-2) in consecutive weeks. Both the Bucs and Saints games are on the road and they draw Tampa Bay following their bye week. Giving the Vikings a win and a loss against the Jaguars and Bucs respectively would put them at 6-7 heading into the crucial Week 15 battle at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Of course, you have to acknowledge that neither the Lions or Texans are gimme games for the Bears at this point. It took a 21 point fourth quarter for Matt Nagy’s crew to overcome Detroit in Week 1. And the Texans just exploded for their highest offensive output of the season on Thanksgiving with Deshaun Watson torching the Lions for 318 yards and four touchdowns.
First things first, the team must end their losing streak this weekend against the Lions. A loss to Detroit would drastically drop their chances from 23 percent in the FiveThirtyEight model to just seven percent.
The Bears host the Lions this Sunday, December 6 at Soldier Field with kickoff set for 12:00 p.m. Central Time.
MINNEAPOLIS (CBS/AP) — David Montgomery rushed for a career-high 146 yards and two touchdowns as the Chicago Bears trampled Minnesota’s depleted defense and hung on for a 33-27 victory on Sunday to stay in the hunt for the expanded playoffs.
The Bears (7-7), who entered the afternoon one game behind Arizona for the new third wild-card spot in the NFC, never trailed in winning at Minnesota for a third straight year. Coach Matt Nagy improved to 5-1 against the Vikings (6-8), whose postseason chances all but vanished.
“This is what you play for. You play for an opportunity to get into the playoffs. We had a bad streak going there, but we knew if we stuck together and battled as a family and just kept leaning on each other, that we could make a run – and we put ourselves in a position to do so,” Trubisky said. “But the guys in the locker room are excited. There’s a really good camaraderie right now – just an intensity and focus that I like to see.”
“We were able to go out there and just, you know, let it loose cut it loose,” Montgomery said. “We’re just excited. Now with this game behind us, we can go back to the drawing board and prepare for week six.”

Nagy expressed confidence in Trubisky’s performance.
“I think he’s doing a really good job at just commanding it and making the decisions – made some nice runs over the middle, wide receivers and tight ends made some great catches running after the catch, so all of that right now is a little bit of our identity that we’re clicking with,” Nagy said.
The Bears punted only once, on the opening possession. It did just about whatever it wanted with the ball until Cameron Dantzler intercepted Mitch Trubisky’s third-and-goal pass into a crowd in the end zone with 2:57 left and a 30-27 lead.
But the Bears, who were plenty vulnerable on defense themselves, delivered their second fourth-and-1 stop in Minnesota territory to get the ball right back for a field goal.
Dalvin Cook rushed for 132 yards and a score, but he was stuffed on third-and-1 before a pivotal incompletion by Kirk Cousins throwing off his back foot. Cairo Santos, who converted all four of his kicks, stretched his streak to 22 straight field goals made.
The Bears then intercepted a last-snap heave by Cousins into the end zone to drop the Vikings to 3-5 at home this year.
Chicago Bulls Cheated Out Of Playoff Game Tonight
Cousins connected with tight end Tyler Conklin for his first career touchdown catch, a 20-yard score off a play-action rollout that pulled the Vikings within three points with 8:05 remaining.
Justin Jefferson had eight receptions for 104 yards and set the single-season franchise rookie record held by Randy Moss with 73 catches and counting. But steady pressure on Cousins produced too many short completions — or worse — for the Vikings to catch up.
When the Vikings beat them 19-13 five weeks ago in Chicago, the Bears managed two first-half field goals and needed a kickoff return touchdown by Cordarrelle Patterson to stay competitive. That was offensive coordinator Bill Lazor’s first turn as the play caller, after Nagy relinquished the responsibility in search of a spark.
But despite losing twice more to stretch their streak to six straight defeats, the offense found a higher gear. Trubisky settled back in at quarterback following the injury to Nick Foles. Left tackle Charles Leno Jr. was the only offensive lineman in the same place as in the previous meeting, when Montgomery was out with a concussion.
The Vikings played without star linebacker Eric Kendricks for the third straight game, applying little pressure on Trubisky and missing Montgomery often on their first-attempt tackles.

After missing three extra points and four field goals over the previous two games and nearly losing his job, Dan Bailey was perfect for the Vikings on three extra points and two field goals.
